‘Aengus Amused’ is not your normal fantasy. It’s funny, thought-provoking and imaginative. There’s time travel, with ogre-guarded muddy puddles—be careful the teethy-snouts don’t get you. There are haggis skeletons—they’ll change you into a tin of beans if you come too close. There’s an ancient god in a filthy cottage, watching wars and famine on his black and white television. Aengus wants to live forever, so must kill the dinosaurs, those dim-witted animals that block evolution. Young Harper and her friends, spirits of the weather, fight back with an Iklwa that can wield the ‘old powers’. When he finds out what they are doing, Aengus’s revenge is terrible, but it doesn’t stop them. They search for the ancient Dozypithicus, he’s sure to help. Most of all, they must bring the Iklwa back to the Paraffin Lake to gain its full strength. Then it will show Aengus a thing or two. Or will it? ‘Aengus Amused’ is a whimsical, alternative history of the death of the dinosaurs, and takes place on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, both in the sort-of present day and sixty-five million years ago.

Aengus Amused is that rare thing - a truly original fantasy novel. Some might miss the humor or the challenge to conventional thinking. But most readers will read this book precisely because of its different take on things.

Who would believe that the adventures of dung beetles, yes, dung beetles, could be so engrossing?

If you're looking for the usual, pass this book by. If you think a satire on obedience to the dictates of convention sounds interesting, dive in - you'll enjoy every word.

Aengus Amused Chris Dews 9780615964706 Books Reviews

In trying to describe 'Aengus Amused', I find myself in some difficulty. This very (ahem) amusing read isn't easy to classify, as it crosses many genre boundaries the wonder and imagination of fantasy, the quick pace and lively action of young adult fiction, the quick-witted humour of . . . I'm not exactly sure what, but something good. And all wrapped into a compelling, ultimately thought-provoking package.

The story begins 65-million years ago, at the end of the dinosaur age, and jumps back and forth from then to the present day, as our daring heroes (weather spirits and their weapon/friend, Iklwa) battle it out with the evil god, Aengus, who loves nothing more than watching war and death. Throughout, we meet beetles and spirits, ogres and time-travelling mud puddles (and lots more), all working up to an epic conclusion.

To summarize a masterfully told tale. Not only does it have all the grandeur natural to stories of heroes and gods . . . it also has beetles and haggis. What's not to like?
Very entertaining read keen wit and fast
paced I was completely engulfed in this world created my mr Dews and am left wanting more. Mr Dews please hurry with the next one!!
But it never did. It was fragmented and often difficult to understand. The plot took wild, fantastical leaps without purpose or cause. By the end of the book, I came to believe that the author's only purpose in writing this book was to provide a platform for his atheist beliefs.
I loved this book. An evil god (Aengus) living in a dilapidated shanty on the Isle of Lewis is determined to wipe out the dinosaurs. He is challenged by the courageous Harper who seeks desperately to stop him, even though he uses his spells against her, transforming her first into a sheep dog and then into a... Well, you'll have to read it to find out.

Realising that she needs a weapon worthy of the task, Harper sets about fashioning one in spite of Aengus's efforts to stop her. Yet that is still not enough and she sets about on a journey to find an ancient wise man who can give her the help she needs.

It's a fantasy, it's an adventure, it's a comedy that will leave you chuckling as the unlikeliest collection of characters and caricatures emerge, and even more, there's just a smidgen of the author's personal philosophy hiding among the laughter.

I enjoyed this very much and recommend it to you.
I did not find this tale amusing. I thought it sounded entertaining and I like quirky stories but this one made up a whole bunch of stuff that was not explained enough to actually create an alternate reality, either in the past or present. The story kept bouncing from past to present in every other chapter, which I found annoying. The characters were not developed enough to get to know them - except the one with the hair fetish, but they changed forms so I couldn't imagine what they looked like.
The Evil All-Powerful character was just too gross - but flat - to want to read about.
I think the author was trying really hard to do something unique and different but it didn't work for me. sorry
I very much enjoyed Aengus Amused. While the story involved magic and elements of the fantasy genre, like any good novel that immerses you in its own world, the characters were well fleshed out and believable to the point that you cared about them and their fate. The protagonists journey back and forth through different lands and time, meeting challenges (that you'd never predict) along their way.

As other reviewers have posted, it's difficult to put into a distinct category of fiction, but fantasy/sorcery is probably the right ballpark. It's loaded with humor and ties its own happenings to certain events/happenings in our past. At a couple of points in the book, the attempt to tie things together or convey a certain philosophical viewpoint gets a little awkward/heavy-handed, but it's a minor distraction to an otherwise extremely well written novel.

If you enjoy whimsical fiction heavy on humor and fantasy elements, you'll enjoy Aengus Amused.
From the fiery hot lava pits in the time of the dinosaurs, to the rain-swept fields of Scotland... an epic tale spanning 65 million years. A journey to find one's true self in time to battle a jealous and vengeful God, who finds joy in the misery of others. A tale of true companionship, overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds, and a cautionary reminder as well that some things are inevitable, no matter how much we may wish otherwise.

Humorous and compelling, an action packed story that just sucks you right in, and before you know it, it's 2am and you should have been asleep hours ago. )
